Gwenda McDougall

Gwenda has been a professional painter since her first exhibition in Noosa, Qld, in 1998, immediately followed by a show at the prestigious ‘Stephanie Hoppen Gallery’ in Knightsbridge, London. Then came consecutive solo shows in Singapore.

Along the way she was Artist in Residence at the prestigious Sofitel Hotel in Beverly Hills, L.A. where she was commissioned to create several original works to decorate the Hotel. Gwenda was also selected to show at Art Basel Miami in 2008 where she enjoyed a sellout exhibition. Gwenda was also a Freelance Fabric Designer for Paris based Pierre Frey Fabrics working directly with Patrick Frey and produced 2 exclusive fabric designs sold worldwide.

Spending several months each year living in Manhattan, NYC , from 2008- 2014, she undertook private commissions as well as Interior Design and Décor assignments.

Gwenda established her Interior Design business in the late 80’s and has worked consistently on both residential and commercial projects since then.

Layers upon layers of acrylic paint adds that depth to each piece which makes the subject pop which I adore. Inspiration comes in many different forms as in still life, magazines, garden clippings or even fabric – I add bits from anything I see and draw them into one painting. I have some wonderful stores and galleries that find homes for my work so that I can continue the dream of painting.

More recently, the luxe champagne bar ‘Rufus’ in Prahran and ‘Chicha’ Restaurant in St.Kilda where she not only designed the large space but also painted all the artwork from abstract to figurative.
Somehow, she has always found time to paint and along the way and has won several awards:

  • Finalist in the Gemini Art Prize – an international competition based in London.
  • Finalist in the Kennedy Art Award based in South Australia and well as Brighton Art Show.
  • Her paintings have won Best Oil painting in the annual Sorrento Art Show, the Whitehorse Art Show and twice at the annual Daylesford Art Show.

Gwenda has always been determined to paint to her own vision and inspirations. Constantly inventing new themes and creating bodies of work, from her Vintage ‘Red Trike’ story in the late 90’s, to Provincial imagery, to Fauna and Flora and New England Portraiture. Her oil paintings are both decorative and narrative and recognised for the detail and richness of colour.
