The New Zealand Kingfisher/ Kōtare is distributed widely throughout the country, but is most common in northern sheltered coastal regions. It favours mangrove swamps, tidal estuaries and mudflats, but also inhabits inland rivers and lake shores, and, particularly in summer months, can be found in the depths of forests. They’re often seen presenting a distinctive silhouette on power poles, fence posts and washing lines throughout the country.
